Every figure printed on this site is arithmetic on the worked example we publish: 6 technicians completing 5.2 jobs a day across 21 working days at an average invoice of $285, with 22% of the day spent travelling; 655 service calls a month of which 14% are rescheduled at 0.18 hours each by a dispatcher costing $32 an hour and 6% never happen; and 240 service agreements at 2 planned visits a year, 1.3 technician hours each at $58, charged at $145 a visit. Change any of those on a worksheet and the numbers change with them. Nothing here is a market statistic and nothing is quoted from a third party.
A field service scheduling app is judged on a van seat, not at a desk, and that changes what matters. The features that sell it in a demo are the office ones: the drag and drop board, the colour coding, the map. The features that decide whether it is still in use in six weeks are all on the technician side, and there are only about four of them. This page is about those four.

Today opens first, and it opens with no signal
A technician standing in a basement with one bar wants the next address and the fault description, and wants them in under three seconds. An app whose first screen is a dashboard, or which needs a round trip to the server before it shows anything, will be replaced by a screenshot of the day sent over text within a fortnight.
Marking a job done has to be one action
Every extra field between finished and done is a field that will be left empty or filled with a full stop. Capture the completion, then ask for the detail while the van is moving to the next call. The notes you actually get are the ones somebody typed in ninety seconds, not the ones a form demanded.
The paperwork is produced where the work happened
A work order written on site is accurate and a work order written that evening is a reconstruction. The same is true of the photograph, the meter reading and the customer signature. If the app cannot produce the document at the customer's address then the office will keep retyping, which is the cost the app was bought to remove.
Time on the job is recorded, because it is paid time
Arrival and departure per job give you the real length of a call, which is the input every other figure on this site depends on. It is also the record that answers a payroll question later: hours worked has a specific meaning under the Fair Labor Standards Act and reconstructing it from memory is how disputes start.

What a dispatcher asks before running the Field service scheduling app
Does it work offline? The day should be readable without signal and completions should queue until there is some. Treat any app that goes blank in a basement as unsuitable, whatever else it does.
Will older technicians use it? If the first screen is their jobs and finishing one is a single tap, generally yes. Adoption problems are almost always design problems wearing a costume.
Is there a per technician charge? No. Dispatchzo Pro is $69 a month for the whole team, so adding somebody to the board never costs more.
